130kg and faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalling
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffWell, i am down to 130.5 kg, lightest i have been for 20 years. Its great.
I had to go to the sleep clinic for a chat with the sleep doctor. the story is that I had to do an inhome sleep test to determine if I still have sleep apnoea. I dont think i have, since I havent needed CPAP since the surgery in June. On dec 23 I find out for sure.
130.5kg = 287 lb – down from 451 lb.
Broke 300lb!!
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffJust hit 291 lb, which is 132KG for the metric amongst us (there are americans involved here :P)
Check out the weightloss graph.
My New Car
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffI havent had it sign written yet, but I am hoping to in the next few weeks:

We took this for a drive to Ruapehu on the weekend, and here is the cutest lil daughter throwing a snowball at me yelling: “I FREEZE YOU”:

the white thing is the snowball 😛
Another before pic for comparison
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffThis pic is from the day my daughter was born. At the time I was about 200kg.

Accurate measurements
/0 Comments/in everything/by Geoff…………..Pre-surgery => post surgery = Loss to Date (cm’s)
Neck: 51 => 46 = 5cm
Wrist: 20.5 => 20 = 0.5cm
Bicep: 45.5 => 40 = 5.5cm
Stomach: 153 => 133.5 = 19.5cm
Chest: 153 => 134.5 = 18.5cm

Great stuff
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffWent out shopping today and was able to buy clothes from the warehouse that actually fitted!! Rock on!
I do need some pants though… pants with elastic waist, but that look dressy… damn near impossible to find. ( I need elastic to stop em falling down, a belt doesnt work)
GOOD NEWS!!
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffI had my final baryium test, to determine whether I still had any leaks in my stomach. As I mentioned in my previous post when they removed the stents they thought they had detected a leak. So.. there are no leaks.. I am NORMAL!!!
Couple of things I have discovered:
1. I can eat bread, whole grain in small quantities.
2. I can eat pasta.
3. I cant eat potato in anything but miniscule quantities.
4. I still sneeze when I cough.
5. Its great sleeping in a bed rather than a recliner.
I havent lost any more weight for a couple of weeks, I am guessing its because I am able to eat more food, and I have been exercising, so some of the muscle I lost in hospital is being replaced.
I thought I would put my new measurements up for interests sake:
…………..Pre-surgery => post surgery = Loss to Date (cm’s)
Neck: 51 => 46 = 5cm
Wrist: 20.5 => 18.5 = 2cm
Bicep: 45.5 => 40 = 5.5cm
Stomach: 153 => 133 = 20cm
Chest: 153 => 135 = 18cm
Starting Weight: 205KG
Current Weight: 137KG
well another nite in hospital
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffTurns out tummy bugs lead to dehydration, which coupled with a urinary tract infection = a stay in hospital over nite. This included 3 catheter insertions and removals, and 3 litres of fluid by IV.
GREAT.
I go back in tomorrow for the gastro surgery to remove the stents.
still struggling
/0 Comments/in everything/by Geoffmade myself a kind of smoothie today… its better, i hvae at least a little energy now..
vomited last night though – although that was because I had to go fox a pc for an old retired guy who was desperate. It was just a bit too much for me.
note though:
Weight when journey started: 205KG (450lb)
Current weight: 150 KG (350lb)
Nausea
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffWell, its me and I am home again. There is an update to go before this which I will get added soon.
I have had 30 something days in middlemore, most of which is “nil by mouth” and now my stomach is really struggling with food and nausea is with me 24/7.
I’ll update again soon when I can concentrate better
NIL by Mouth – note from the hospital
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffWell here’s the story so far. After the surgery when I got home I was finding it hard to sleep, there was this pain in my chest and shoulder. on Monday morning I went to my GP and he didn’t know what the pain was, but referred me to Middlemore after I nearly collapsed on the floor.
Every bump or movement on the way to the hospital was excruciating. Got to Middlemore, then to a ward. No one seemed to know what was wrong. Went off for tests, xrays, etc and eventually got some painkillers, however, by now the painkillers only barely dulled the pain.
Once in the ward they decided I needed morphine. At one point they had given me the maximum dosage and they said “what’s your pain level now?” – I said well the shoulder and the stomach are ok, but my chest is 9 or higher. The nurse responded with “oh dear, this is serious.” I’m thinking “sheesh this IS serious when 6-8 gm morphine can’t dull the pain.
Early in the morning (I think) I was taken off for a CT scan. I drand some metallic fluid and then they scanned me. They quickly determined that there was fluid/gas leaking from the staples into my abdomen. So next day they took me to gastro where I was put under, tubes shoved down my throat. They put in a thing called a “stent” to plug up the hole. Unfortunately I came around before they had finished, which traumatised me somewhat.
The next step then is to wait for the stent to bed in (note: I haven’t eaten since the original sergery). They determined 5 days should be long enough, the day before the test they even let me have clear fluids….FLAVOUR!!!! The transition test happened, then went “oops” still leaking. And off back to gastro I went, this time they refused to put me under and I went through 2 hours of procedure while being awake. TRAUMA! I though I was going to go insane.
Back to the ward and then another week of pain, no sleep, nil by mouth and waiting, waiting, waiting.
One week later, off to have another test to see if there is leaking 🙁 yes, still a small leak. My specialist has gone away for 6 months so now I have a new (but very experienced) specialist – Dr H Rahman.
Dr Rahman says that all we can do now is wait. It wil eventually heal itself. So all I can do is sit – wait….pray
Note From Amber – the cuter half :)
/0 Comments/in everything, weightloss/by GeoffHi Everyone – just to update you Geoff has had a complication – there was a small leak in his stomach so gas was escaping into his abdominal cavity and causing him alot of pain. He went to the doctors first thing due to pain low in his abdomen and his shoulder on July 6th and they sent him straight to the hospital and that is where he has been ever since. Luckily he has avoided having to undergo surgery again and they have put a stint (sp?) in his stomach and he hasn’t been allowed to have anything to eat or drink. Yesterday they allowed a couple sips an hour and today he is allowed a verrrrrrrrrrrrry small glass to drink as well as a few sips and hopefully tomorrow he will get to try some pureed fruit. So hopefully he will be home in a couple days and can update you all himself 🙂 He was looking much better today then he has since he went back into hospital.
HOME!!!
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffYep, finally home.
I realised my problem was that i thought I had to take tiny little sips of fluid and then wait.. but in reality, you can take a reasonable size sip, and then wait.. So.. I had to wait till I had drunk a litre of water before they would let me have solids, and then go home.
So, I am about to go and sit in my chair, have a pot of yogurt, and watch TV!
YAY
I am still a bit tender, and my calves have locked up due to the compression socks I had on… I did alot of walking in hospital, with not much blood flow :S
I’ll take measurements later and see how we are placed for the down hill run.
day 1 update
/0 Comments/in everything/by GeoffWell i am sitting here in the hospital. Yesterday I had the sleeve done. It all appeared to go well. I had a fair bit of pain last night and didn’t sleep at all.
Finally got an hours worth a few mins ago. I’m drinking 30mls of water an hour, and I just did 2 laps of the hospital, albeit slowly.
I spent a few minutes wondering what the hell I had done to myself, but now the worst appears to be over, and I am looking forward to it.
The staff here at MSC have been wonderful, absolutely wonderful.
Anyway, will update again when I get home.
