  == Biography == Mary was born about 1861. She is the daughter of [[Rowe-6209|William Rowe]], a tin miner, and [[Grenfell-297|Mary Ann Grenfell]] of Cornwall. Her father died when she was young, and her mother remarried to a man from Bristol, James Spence. The Spence family, with Mary, emigrated from Cornwall to New Zealand, and settled in the Malvern area in the South Island. She married [[Maurice-221|Alex William Maurice]] about 1879.
