      Samuel was born about 1851. He passed away in 1917 aged 66 years old.

      DEATH OF OLD COLONIST. MR. SAMUEL D. HANNA. CONNECTION WITH, FREEZING, A well-known member of the commercial community, Mr. Samuel Dawson Hanna, died at his residence, Domain, Drive, Parnell, yesterday. Mr.Hanna arrived in Auckland in 1865, and adopted ,the engineering profession, being articled to the firm of Masefield and Company. Later he assumed charge, of the' pumping station at Western Springs and superintended the erection of the whole; plant. In the early days of the freezing industry he occupied the dual position of manager and chief engineer. of the Auckland freezing works. He subsequently established his own business, which he carried on until recently, when ill-health compelled him to dispose of it. Mr.Hanna occupied the position of secretary of the Institute of Marine Engineers , since 1893. As an active member of the West End Rowing Club he interested himself in aquatic matters. In Freemasonry he was a prominent figure, being a Past Grand Warden, and Past Master of Lodge Ara, 348, and Ara No. 1. N.Z.C. Mr. Hanna, who was 65 years of age, is survived by a widow, who was niece of-the late Mr. R. Graham, Superintendent of the Province, and by seven children. One son is attached to the Motor patrol Service, and another is with the 1 N.Z.M.C., now in France. New Zealand Herald, Volume LIV, Issue 16456, 5 February 1917
