- == Biography ==William was very likely the William "Garton" baptized 14 Jun 1564 at St. Nicholas Great Yarmouth as son of "Wyllyam" and "Beatryce" Garton
[Wyllyam Garton in 1564 Norfolk Baptisms Great Yarmouth, St Nicholas with St Peter, St John, St Andrew, St James, St Paul & St Luke, Norfolk, England [https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FBAP%2F001896362 $subscription required]] (given that his son Joseph's name was also written as "Garton" at his baptism in the original parish register which is very legible). This would make him 31 at first known marriage to Katherine Nymons, a bit old but not abnormally so. This William was married as William "Grafton", not Garton (again based on the very legible original parish register, not a transcription) so it seems that for this family, the name Grafton and Garton were both used.
His father was almost certainly the William Garton buried at St. Nicholas on 19 March 1568/69.[Wyllyam Garton in 1568 Norfolk Burials Great Yarmouth, St Nicholas with St Peter, St John, St Andrew, St James, St Paul & St Luke, Norfolk, England [https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FBUR%2F001678887 $subscription required]] In fact this burial becomes more likely when we see Beatrice Garton marrying John Bacon on 28 August 1570 at the same location likely as a widow with several young children although again without supplemental text.[Beatrix Garton in 1570 Norfolk Banns And Marriages Great Yarmouth, St Nicholas with St Peter, St John, St Andrew, St James, St Paul & St Luke, Norfolk, England [https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FMAR%2F000617255%2F2 $subscription required]] A Beatrice "Bunne alias Garton" was buried 9 Jan 1625/26 at St. Nicholas and if "Bunne" is a possible transcription of "Bacon" it would seem likely to be her burial.[Bettris Bunne Or Garton in 1625 Norfolk Burials Great Yarmouth, St Nicholas with St Peter, St John, St Andrew, St James, St Paul & St Luke, Norfolk, England [https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FBUR%2F001732220 $subscription required]] The original image does seem to say "Bunne" but spelling could be fairly variable at that time and his name in the marriage record could easily be read as "Bunne" as well.
The will of WIlliam Garton dated 23 Feb 1568/69 (11 Elizabeth) probated 1 May 1569 has been found and transcribed and includes wife Beatrix and a son William "Garton" who was not yet 21.[England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858 for Willmi Garton will written 23 Feb 1568/59 PROB 11: Will Registers 1567-1598 Piece 51: Sheffelde (1569) [https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/5111/images/40611_311316-00177 $subscription] and [https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/30319768?h=1f6516 free image courtesy of ancestry.com]]
=== Marriage & Children ===William Grafton (as spelled in the original parish register) and Katherine Nymons were married at St. Nicholas Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 15 September 1596.[Norfolk Parish Registers for St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth 1596 marriage of William Grafton, Katherine Nymons [https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=gbprs%2fnorfolk%2fpd_28-1%2f00826 unindexed image, $subscription required]] This couple had several children baptized at Great Yarmouth St. Nicholas:#[https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=R_874732846 John 14 Aug 1597] possibly the male of this name [https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FBUR%2F001733280 buried 27 March 1626] who's probate likely appears as item [https://nrocatalogue.norfolk.gov.uk/index.php/grafton-john-of-great-yarmouth ANW 22/3/27] at the Norfolk Record Office online catalog as microfilm MF/RO 250/9.#[https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FBAP%2F001909411 Elizabeth 19 Mar 1599] married Thomas Edwards 14 Jan 1626/27[Norfolk : Great Yarmouth : St Nicholas : Parish Register : "Parish Register" database, FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/58183371e93790eb7f5b0b5d : viewed 14 Aug 2022) marriage Thomas Edwards to Elizab Grafton 14 Jan 1626/27]#[https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FBAP%2F001909905 Abigail 7 Jan 1601] married John Taylor 28 Jan 1623/24 both listed as single.[Norfolk : Great Yarmouth : St Nicholas : Parish Register : "Parish Register" database, FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5818336ee93790eb7f5b07ff : viewed 15 Aug 2022) marriage John Taylor to Abigall Grafton 28 Jan 1623/24] Had several children, buried as wife of John "Tayler" at St. Nicholas 18 Feb 1634.#[[Grafton-13|Joseph Grafton]] baptized 23 September 1603 at St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk as Joseph "Garton" son of William and Katherine.[St. Nicholas Great Yarmouth, Norfolk parish records at findmypast.co.uk 1603 baptism of Joseph Garton/Grafton [https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=gbprs%2fnorfolk%2fpd_28-1%2f00743 $subscription required]] #[https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=gbprs%2fnorfolk%2fpd_28-1%2f00748 William on 2 Nov 1606] who was presumably the one buried on 24 Dec 1607[https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=gbprs%2fnorfolk%2fpd_28-1%2f00748]#[https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=gbprs%2fnorfolk%2fpd_28-1%2f00753 Job on 13 Nov 1608] buried on [https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBPRS%2FNORFOLK%2FBUR%2F001713106 28 Nov 1608] and this is definitely not "Jos"#[https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=gbprs%2fnorfolk%2fpd_28-1%2f00754 William on 23 May 1610] 3 months after the death of his father. Married Elizabeth Reve 22 Dec 1633 at St. Nicholas.[Norfolk : Great Yarmouth : St Nicholas : Parish Register : "Parish Register" database, FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/58183379e93790eb7f5b145c : viewed 14 Aug 2022) marriage William Grafton to Elizabeth Reve 22 Dec 1633]
Very few of these baptismal records are indexed for searching so it requires a manual search of parish records; this also applies to his siblings listed below. A visual review of the parish baptismal records uncovered no other "Grafton" couples having children at St. Nicholas Great Yarmouth during this decade and no William & Katherine of any name remotely similar to Garton or Grafton suitable to be Joseph's parents.
The only other "Garton" couple found having children at this time were Anthony Garton and Sarah Wood (their probates appear in 1604 and 1602 respectively at Great Yarmouth in a search of the [https://nrocatalogue.norfolk.gov.uk/index.php/informationobject/browse?sq0=Garton&sf0=&levels=&topLod=0&startDate=1600-01-01&endDate=1630-12-31&rangeType=inclusive Norfolk Record Office Catalog]).
His name was written as Joseph "Garton" but with parents William and "Kattern", just as her name is written for her other children's baptisms, and given that no other Grafton records appear in this parish and that no "Garton" records are found other than this one, these certainly seem to be his parents.
=== Death & Estate ===William would seem to be the man of this name buried 2 Feb 1609/10 at St. Nicholas.[Norfolk : Great Yarmouth : St Nicholas : Parish Register : "Parish Register" database, FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/58188ac8e93790ec754c76c2 : viewed 13 Aug 2022) burial William Grafton 02 Feb 1609/10] although there was no supplemental text; this register does not include phrases such as "widow" or "son of" so when his young son William was buried in 1607, it did not say "son of William. Given that his widow Katherine Grafton married Robert Rabey at St. Nicholas in 1613, this burial record was very likely William's which means his last son, also named William was born about 3 months after the father's death.
Katherine (as widow Rabey having outlived both William Grafton and Robert Rabey who she married at St. Nicholas on 2 August 1613[Catherine Grafton in 1613 England, Boyd's Marriage Indexes, 1538-1850 Norfolk, England [https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=GBPRS/NORFOLK/PD_28-1/00838 $subscription required]][Norfolk : Great Yarmouth : St Nicholas : Parish Register : "Parish Register" database, FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/58183359e93790eb7f5aea6b : viewed 13 Aug 2022) marriage Robert Rabey to Katteren Grafton 02 Aug 1613]) traveled from Great Yarmouth to Salem, Massachusetts in 1637, explaining to the passenger licensing official that she was traveling to New England to be with her son.[Barbara MacAllan, "The Great Yarmouth Company of Migrant Families," in ''NEHGR,'' 154 (2000):[https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-register/image/?volumeId=11634&pageName=216&rId=143498391 215-216 $subscription required]]
A will for William Grafton has not yet been located.
=== Research Notes ===*The 1594 will of Thomas Garton, merchant of Great Yarmouth was downloaded and it listed his late father Thomas, his still-living mother Johane (testator purchased land from her), wife Anne, daughter Ellen (under 21), another daughter possibly Dorothy spelled "Dorothe" but hard to read, brothers Anthony (the above) and John Garton, sisters Judith, Elizabeth & Susan. Probably not related but just in case anybody is research Gartons...reference PROB 11/84/14 at UK National Archives.
