=== CAUTION: Disproven Information ===It is often claimed that Sarah’s first husband was William Story or Storer and as the “widow Sarah Storie” she married Joseph Austin as his second wife.”Genealogical Items related to Dover, N. H.”, New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Vol. 5 (1851):October, pp.449-456. Joseph Austin, p. 450 Hinchman, Lydia Swain Mitchell. Originally published as: New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Boston, Mass.: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2015.
While Torrey continues show Sarah’s marriage to Joseph Austin as her second marriage, it is worth noting that Torrey also shows Samuel Austin as the husband of the widow Story.
The claim is justified by a second claim, that administration of William Story’s estate was granted to Joseph Austin, Sarah’s second husband.Scales, John History of Dover, New Hampshire : containing historical, genealogical and industrial data of its early settlers, their struggles and triumphs. (Dover, N.H.: Printed by authority of the City Councils, 1923). pp. 318-19, 372-73, available on Ancestry
However, William Story’s widow married Samuel Austin, not Joseph Austin. Administration of Story’s estate was granted to Samuel Austin 27 July 1661, based on an Inventory of Story’s estate taken 8 October 1660. Samuel Austin was named the father-in-law [step father] of William and Sarah Storey’s four children. Batchellor, Albert Stillman, editor. There is no evidence that Sarah Starbuck was the wife of William Story. Further, she was not old enough to be the mother of his children, the youngest of whom was born in 1640, when Sarah Starbuck was no more than10 years of age.
=== Origins ===Sarah Starbuck was the daughter of Edward Starbuck and Katherine Reynolds. No record of Sarah’s birth currently is known, but her birth is frequently estimated to be about 1630. Her parents did not arrive in New Hampshire until 1635,, so Sarah was most likely born in Derbyshire, England.
=== Marriages and Children ===Sarah married Joseph Austin as her first husband sometime before October 1649. (Date of the marriage is based on her father Edward’s move to Nantucket in 1649.) Their children were:

* Deborah Austin (1647/1652 - 4 Feb 1718)
* Joseph Austin (1653 - young)
* Mary Austin (1653/1655 - 1 Jun 1721)
* Thomas Austin (ABT 1656 - )
* Benjamin Austin (1657/1658 - AFT 1681)
* Nathaniel Austin (1660 - )
Sarah married Humphrey Varney as her second husband on 2 March 1664 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire. Their children were: Noyes, Sybil; Charles Thornton Libby; and Walter Goodwin Davis. Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire. (Portland, Maine: Southworth Press, 1928-1939), p. 703*John Varney, b. 1664, Nantucket and died there in 1666 *Peter Varney, b. 1666 in Dover, named in his father's will*Joseph Varney, b. 1667, Dover, not named in father's will
*Abigail Varney b. 1669, Dover, named in father's will*Ebenezer Varney, b. aft 1672, Dover, named in father's will*John Varney, birth not recorded, may have been about 1671, not named in father's will (may have been previously deceased)
=== Death ===Currently, no record of Sarah's death is known. She is named in her husband Humphrey Varney's will written on 17 September 1713 and entered into probate on 2 June 1714, so presumably died after those dates.
