== Biography =={{Nantucket Founders and Descendants Sticker|descendant|Tristram Coffin Sr}}Peter owned land, forests and lumber mills. Although he was one of the purchasers of Nantucket, he lived there for only a short time. His residence there began about the time of King Philip's War. He is reputed to have been the wealthiest of the first purchasers. Peter, by original grant and by purchase from John Bishop, finally owned the tract of land bounded by Thomas Macy's lot on the east and Tristram Coffin's on the west and extending to the sea. In 1664, by a vote of the inhabitants, he was licensed to carry on trading with the islanders, and all others but "Nick Davis", who lived near the Atheneum, were prohibited. He was chosen a magistrate at Nantucket and occupied an important position in the Town affairs. He was an opponent of the John Gardner faction in the "Insurrection." With father and two oldest brothers, he purchased Tuckernuck Island, adjacent to Nantucket. Peter left Nantucket for New Hampshire, where he lived most of his life, becoming a representative to the General Justice of the Supreme Court of that state.
Peter settled first in Exeter and then in Dover, NH, where he owned a large garrison house. It was burned down during the June Chochecho Indian Massacre. He and his family were spared but forced to help the Indians enter, pillage and destroy the garrison house of his son, Tristram.
Most of his life was spent in Dover and Exeter, New Hampshire. In Dover, he was made a Freeman in 1666; in 1675 he was commissioned a Lieutenant in service in King Philip's War; he was a representative in the General Court in 1672-3 and 1679.
Peter returned to Nantucket in 1676/7 where he became Asst. magistrate, when Thomas Macy refused to give up the office after his commission had expired.
He moved to Exeter in 1690. From 1692 to 1714 he was at different times Associate Justice and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Hampshire and a member of the Governor's Council.
Peter was a noted man in his day, "a gentleman very serviceable in church and state," as the writer of his obituary said. He was councillor, judge, etc.; had a garrison house at Dover which was captured 1689, when Peter lost considerable hard money, which grieved him sorely.
