== Biography ==
{{PGM Minor Child}} James Shaw was born about 1624-6 in England; there's no evidence of his mother's identity and it's unlikely it was his father's wife Alice (birth surname unknown) who died at Plymouth in March of 1654/5. [Shaw, Jonathan A. "John Shaw of Plymouth Colony, Purchaser and Canal Builder." New England Genealogical and Historical Register, Volume 151. July 1997. ''By Subscription'' (Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2018.) [https://www.americanancestors.org/DB202/i/11639/261/0 Page 261.]]The means and date of his arrival in the Plymouth Colony are unknown. His birth date is estimated based upon his appearance in Colony records when he would have been of age (21.)[Shurtleff, Nathaniel B. Records of the Colony of New Plymouth of New England, Court Orders Vol. I 1633-1640. Boston, MA: Legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1857. ===Plymouth===
James' name appears in Colony records several times, including:
* Aug 1643 James was on the Plymouth list of "Males that are able to beare Armes."[Shurtleff, 1855. [https://archive.org/stream/recordsofcolonyo0708newp#page/n199/mode/2up/search/Shaw Page 187.]]* 07 May 1650 James and John Jr. were convicted of damage and ordered to pay Edward Doty 35 shillngs.[Shurtleff, 1855. [https://archive.org/stream/recordsofcolonyo0102newp#page/148/mode/2up/search/shaw Page 149.]]* 07 Jun 1653 James was on a list of those under consideration for becoming a freeman.[Shurtleff, Nathaniel B. Records of the Colony of New Plymouth of New England, Court Orders Vol. III 1651-1661. Boston, MA: Legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1855. [https://archive.org/stream/recordsofcolonyo0304newp#page/n43/mode/2up/search/shaw Page 33.]] He was admitted on June of 1654.[Shurtleff, 1855. [https://archive.org/stream/recordsofcolonyo0304newp#page/n61/mode/2up/search/shaw Page 48.]]* 1658 John Sr., "Serjeant" James, and Jonathan are listed as freeman in 1658 (but John Jr. is missing from the list.)[Shurtleff, 1857. [https://archive.org/stream/recordsofcolonyo0708newp#page/n209/mode/2up/search/Shaw Page 197.]]
In March of 1658 John Sr. gave his son James land in Cushena (Dartmouth) with the proviso that if John Jr. "shall come within the term of four years" that John Jr. was to receive one half.[Bowman, 1908. [https://books.google.com/books?id=BQLosquR29AC&pg=PA34&dq=Mayflower+Descendant+1908+James+Shaw&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiQo4Hixt_rAhWCU80KHS_gCdUQ6AEwAHoECAUQAg#v=onepage&q=Mayflower%20Descendant%201908%20James%20Shaw&f=false Page 34.]] James must have started using the property because in 1660 the Court wanted him to begin paying taxes .[Shurtleff, 1855. [https://archive.org/stream/recordsofcolonyo0304newp#page/n215/mode/2up/search/shaw Page 202.]]
===Dartmouth===
In 1652, 36 purchasers owned land in what is now known as Dartmouth.Very few of them settled there, and the land was sold for profit.[Ricketson, Daniel. The History of New Bedford, Bristol County Massachusetts. New Bedford, MA: Self-Published, 1858. [https://books.google.com/books?id=h8t4AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA30&dq=History+of+New+Bedford+Chapter+III&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjjmevuhuLrAhVeB50JHU5lDp8Q6AEwA3oECAYQAg#v=onepage&q=Chapter%20III&f=false Page 30.]] James was one of only seven freemen who resided there. He held positions on behalf of the Colony, including constable, tax collector, military leader, and selectman several times, with his last appointment in 1675.[Shaw, 1997. [https://www.americanancestors.org/DB202/i/11639/275/0 Page 275.]]
James seems to have withdrawn from civic life; he does not appear in known Colony or Dartmouth records after 1675.
=== Family===James married [[Mitchell-146|Mary (Mitchell) Shaw]] 24 Dec 1652 in Plymouth.[Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. Boston 1899. The Mayflower descendant : a quarterly magazine of Pilgrim genealogy and history.[https://archive.org/details/mayflowerdescendv4mass/page/n331 pg 151]] [Shurtleff, 1857. [https://archive.org/stream/recordsofcolonyo0708newp#page/n27/mode/2up/search/shaw Page 15.]]
None of James' and Mary's children appear to have survived to have issue.James' nephew is recorded as disposing of property in lieu of any of James' able/surviving children.[Shaw, 1997. [https://www.americanancestors.org/DB202/i/11639/275/0 Page 275.]]
