Notes |
- == Speculations ==Hannah Bryant's position in the family tree of New England cannot be conclusively asserted. The problem is connecting the documented birth of a Hannah Bryant with the Hannah who married Ebenezer Bartlett and Thomas Delano, Jr.
Alden Smith notes the birth of a Hannah to Lt. John and Abigail Bryant and then says, "no further records". [D. Alden Smith, "The Descendants of Stephen Bryant of Plymouth, and of his Son-in-Law Lt. John Bryant of Plympton," The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 153 (October 1999), online archives, American Ancestors (http://www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-register/image/?pageName=413&volumeId=11657&filterQuery=databasename:register : viewed 18 March 2018), p. 428, "ii. HANNAH BRYANT, b. 2 Dec. 1668. No further record.".] Torrey's marriages suggest that the maiden name of Hannah Bartlett Delano was "Warren".["Torrey's New England Marriages to 1700," database index, New England Historic Genealogical Society, AmericanAncestors (http://www.americanancestors.org/databases/torreys-new-england-marriages-to-1700/image/?volumeId=21174&pageName=440&rId=426883377: viewed 18 March 2016), p 440, "DELANO, Thomas & Hannah (WARREN) BARTLETT, w Ebenezer; 24 Oct 1699, 1698 in dup. rec.: Duxbury {MD 9:109; Duxbury 251; Sv. 1:132; Drown (ms) 70; Putnam's Mag. 6:69; Reg. 52:439; NYGBR 37:73}".]The Delano family history omits a maiden name, giving only the first name, Hannah.[Maj Joel Andrew Delano, (compiler), The genealogy, history and alliances of the American house of Delano, 1621 to 1899: with the history and heraldry of the maison de Franchimont and de Lannoy to Delano, 1096 to 1621, and the royal ancestry of Lannoy from Guelph, prince of the Scyrri, to Phillippe de Lannoy, 476 A. D. to 1621, including other royal lines and a list of the Lannoy chevaliers de la toison d'or [golden fleece] (New York: [n.p.], 1899), ; digital images, Open Library, Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/books/OL23693816M/The_genealogy_history_and_alliances_of_the_American_house_of_Delano_1621_to_1899. ]
Mayflower Descendants refers to a "Hannah (Bryant?) Bartlett".[For example, Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes and Alicia Crane Williams, compiler and editor, respectively, Family of John Alden, Mayflower Families through Five Generations: Descendants of the Pilgrims who Landed at Plymouth, Mass. December 1620, Vol 16, Part 1 (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1999), p 149, "54. THOMAS DELANO...married at Duxbury, 24 October 1698 (VR, 9, 'dup 1699'), HANNAH (BRYANT?) BARTLETT, perhaps daughter of Lt. John and Abigail (Bryant) Bryant (MFIP Warren, #53; John Bryant, Sr., of Plymouth was a surety on the estate of her first husband), born at Plymouth, 2 December 1668 (VR, 11; MD, 1:210)".]
This biography assumes, as others have, that the speculation in Mayflower Descendants is correct, and provides facts premised on that assumption.
== Biography ==
Hannah was born in Plymouth, 2 Dec 1668, to Lt. John Bryant and Abigail (Bryant) Bryant. ["Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850: Plymouth Vol 1," database index with images, New England Historic Genealogical Society, American Ancestors (AmericanAncestors.org: viewed 16 February 2015), p 11, "The children of Lt. John Bryant & of Abigail his wife...2 Hannah born Dec. the 2d 1668"; citing transcription of Lee D van Antwerp (compiler) and Ruth Wilder Sherman (editor), "Vital Records of Plymouth, Massachusetts to the Year 1850," Picton Press, Camden, Maine, 1993.]["Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915," database index, FamilySearch.org (: accessed 5 August 2015), Hannah Bryant, 02 Dec 1668; citing Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, p19; FHL microfilm 416,334.]
Some time prior to 1693, she married Ebenezer Bartlett.
They had two children, but Ebenezer died about five years later.[Robert S. Wakefield, compiler, Family of Richard Warren, Mayflower Families through Five Generations: Descendants of the Pilgrims who Landed at Plymouth, Mass. December 1620, Vol 18, part 1 (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1999), p 50.]
Ebenezer died intestate and Hannah was appointed as the executrix of the estate on 22 March 1697/8. She and two others, Samuel Bartlet of Duxbury and John Bryant, Sr. of Plymouth, posted bond.
The appearance of John Bryant in this relationship is the foundation for the speculation that Hannah Bartlett was born Hannah Bryant.
On 24 October 1698 (or 1699--duplicate records differ on the year), she marrried Thomas Delano, 2nd, of Duxbury, blacksmith.
They eventually had five children in all.
In September 1700 Hannah Delano, the new wife of Thomas Delano Jr. was charged with fornication while being a "single person." She pleaded not guilty and requested a trial by jury, which found her not guilty indicating that the child was naturally premature. (When married couples were required to appear in court for the charge of fornication, it indicates that their first child was born less than nine months after the marriage.)[Woodworth-Barnes and Williams, Family of John Alden, p. 150, "Hannah Delano 'the wife of Thomas Delano Jr.' was presented for fornication 'while a single person' at the September 1700 Court of General Sessions at Plymouth. She pleaded not guilty 'and put her self on tryall by a jury who found her not guilty' (Plymouth Co Ct Recs, 1:127; MD, 40:32).".]
On 18 Feb 1719/20, she and her husband, Thomas Delano, deeded one half of the farm that she had inherited from her first husband, Ebenezer Bartlett, to his son, also Ebenezer Bartlett.[Wakefield, Family of Richard Warren, p. 50, "On 18 Feb. 1719/20 Thomas Delano of Duxborough, blacksmith, and wife Hannah deeded to Ebenezer Bartlett of Duxborough, blacksmith, one half of farm in Duxborough, which was formerly the farm of Ebenezer Bartlett, dec.".]
Thomas and Hannah were granted membership in the Plymouth Church on 15 August 1725.[Wakefield, Family of Richard Warren, p 50, "On 15 Aug. 1725 Thomas Delano and wife Hannah from Duxbury joined the Plymouth Church".] This sets the lower bound for her date of death. The upper bound, 30 Jan 1732, is set by a mention of her in a deed as deceased. It's possible that she died in a smallpox epidemic in 1730.[Woodworth-Barnes and Williams, Family of John Alden, p 149, "HANNAH (BRYANT?) BARTLETT... died after 15 August 1725 (church record), probably before 30 January 1732 (deed), perhaps in a small pox epidemic in 1730 (town record)".]
