Mayflower Passenger
Biography
John Allerton was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620.[Bradford, William, 1590-1657. Of Plimoth Plantation: manuscript, 1630-1650. State Library of Massachusetts "List of Mayflower Passengers."][Caleb Johnson. John Allerton at MayflowerHistory.com: 2016.][Anderson, Robert Charles. The Pilgrim Migration: Immigrants to Plymouth Colony 1620-1633. Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2004 free at americanancestors] Although little is known of his life, it is generally assumed he was a relation of fellow Mayflower passenger Isaac Allerton, possibly a brother.[Johnson, Caleb. & Allan, Sue & Neal, Simon. The Origin and Parentage of Mayflower Passenger Isaac Allerton in East Bergholt, Suffolk, The New England Historical & Genealogical Register (NEHGS, Boston, Mass., 2019) Vol. 173, WN 691, Page 203-204.] If that were true then he would probably originate from East Bergholt, Suffolk, England.
He appears to have lived with the Pilgrim congregation established in Leiden, Holland. "Jan Alaerton" buried a child at St. Peters in Leiden on 21 May 1616, and he lived in close proximity to Isaac Allerton, in a place near Pieterskerkhof.[Johnson, Caleb H. The Mayflower and Her Passsengers. Indiana: Xlibris Corp., 2006. p. 71]
John Allerton signed the Mayflower Compact 11 Nov 1620.[Morton, Nathaniel. New England's memorial. (Boston: Congregational board of publication, 1855) Originally published 1669, online at Archive.org., p. 26. Note: The original compact is gone. Morton furnished the earliest known list 1669 facsimile.]
6 Dec 1620, while anchored at Cape Cod and before discovering Plymouth, nineteen men, including John Allerton, took a shallop to further explore the coast, looking for a suitable place to build the settlement. The force was attacked by Indians, and nearly wrecked in a storm. They did explore what is today known as Plymouth and decided it was a suitable place to settle. William Bradford tells the exciting tale in "Of Plimouth Plantation."
In 1651, Governor William Bradford wrote of John Allerton's intention to return to Leiden to help others in the church prepare for their voyages to Plymouth. He "was to go back (being a seaman) for the help of others left behind.”
However, he did not fulfill this ambition, as he died the first winter at Plymouth without any known living issue,[ before 5 April 1621, when the Mayflower made the return trip to England.]
