Puritan Great Migration
=== Disputed Origins ===Previously, Thomas Waterman and Lydia Chadwick were attached to this profile -- and also to the profile of Richard Waterman -- as parents, without benefit of sources accepted by the PGM Project. Professional research by some of the most respected genealogists of recent decades -- Donald Lines Jacobus in 1987, and Robert Charles Anderson in 2010 (in the "Great Migration" series of volumes) -- could not reveal Richard's origins, and his actual parentage remains unknown. Similarly, Anderson's "Great Migration Directory" shows Robert's origins as "unknown"; there is no known evidence that Richard and Robert were brothers or even kin.
Additionally, while the online transcribed records of St. Andrew's, Norwich, do support the christening of a Thomas Waterman in 1564, they do not show a marriage to a Lydia Chadwick, nor do they show the birth of either a Richard Waterman or a Robert Waterman there in or near 1608.
For these reasons, the alleged parents have been detached.
== Biography == Robert Waterman is thought to have been born about 1608; though various texts place his birth at Norwich, Norfolk, his English origins are in fact not known (see “Disputed Origins” above). He married, on the 11th of December, 1638, at Marshfield, Massachusetts Bay, Elizabeth Bourne.["Plymouth Colony Vital Records", transcribed by George Ernest Bowman, Mayflower Descendant, Boston, MA: Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, Vol. 13, p. 84; https://www.americanancestors.org/DB407/i/12338/84/0 (by subscription)]
Robert died at Marshfield on the 10th of December, 1652, aged 44.["The Vital Records of Marshfield, Massachusetts", transcribed by George Ernest Bowman, in The Mayflower Descendant: A Quarterly Magazine of Pilgrim Genealogy and History, Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1900, Vol. 2, p 5: "Robert Watterman deceased The 10 of december 1652"]
After his death, his widow Elizabeth married Thomas Tilden.[The Snow-Estes Ancestry, Nora E. Snow, author and publisher; compiled by Myrtle M. Jillson, Hillburn, N.Y. : N. E. Snow, 1939, Vol. 2, pp. 145-147; https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89092836782&view=1up&seq=171]
Robert Waterman arrived in New England by 1638 -- the year of his recorded marriage at Marshfield -- and possibly by 1636. Much of the most desirable land near Plymouth had by that time been settled; Waterman was however able to find an attractive location in what became Marshfield, close to Green's Harbor. In 1639, he purchased the land from Edward Holman.["Massachusetts Land Records, 1620-1986," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9Z7-5CRV : 22 May 2014), Plymouth > Deeds 1620-1651 vol 1 > image 68 of 239; county courthouses and offices, Massachusetts.] It became his permanent residence, and through the remainder of his life he served the new town in a variety of roles;[History and Genealogy of the Mayflower Planters and First Comers to Ye Olde Colonie, by Leon Clark Hills, Genealogical Publishing Company, 2009, p. 153; https://books.google.com/books?id=7R9FrcTCswMC&pg=RA1-PA153&lpg=RA1-PA153#v=onepage&q&f=false] he is recorded as a proprietor in 1643, a member of the militia (also in 1643), a deputy (1646), and a town officer.[The Snow-Estes Ancestry, as above; https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89092836782&view=1up&seq=171]
The Waterman house by Green's Harbor was on Marshfield Neck, and Robert was the last of the original settlers of the Neck to build there. One of his four sons -- Joseph, who married Mayflower granddaughter Sarah Snow -- ultimately inherited the farm; at Robert's death in 1652, his younger sons had been placed under the guardianship of neighbors Josiah Winslow and Anthony Snow -- Sarah's father -- whose wife was Abigail Warren, daughter of Mayflower passenger Richard Warren:[See WikiTree profile of Anthony Snow][Marshfield A Town of Villages 1640-1990, by Cynthia Hagar Krusell and Betty Magoun Bates, 1990, pp. 75-76 [not available online, Oct. 2020]]

== Research Notes ==This profile previously stated that Elizabeth (Bourne) Waterman "was born in England in 1618 at Tenderdon, in Kent, and died on the 12th of December, 1663, at Marshfield. She was a daughter of Thomas Bourne (1581-1664) and Elizabeth Bassendon (1590-1660)." No primary or reliable secondary source has been found for that birth location, nor for the claim that her mother's maiden surname was Bassendon; further research is needed. FreeReg UK shows no Elizabeth Bourne christened at Tenterden between 1610 and 1620; neither does FamilySearch. The two sites show various Elizabeth Bournes born elsewhere in Kent in the time period, but none of these have a father named Thomas.
FamilySearch does show an Elizabeth _Bryssenden_ baptized half a dozen miles northeast of Tenterden, at Bethersden, in 1595, a daughter of Izaake (she seems most likely to have been a "replacement child" for an Elizabeth christened in 1590 and likely lost in infancy); but no record has been found of her marrying a Thomas Bourne.
The profile also originally included a link with the header, "The Bourne Identity..."; the link offered, however, leads to an ancestry.com source, a family tree -- not a type of source recognized by the PGM Project as reliable -- which can be viewed only with a paid subscription.
